Read all questions in this section and pick one you would like to answer (high school students pick two).  Answer with about 75 to 150 words (high school students use 150 to 250 words)


1.  What evidence is there that argues that Lief Ericcson “discovered” the North American continent long before Columbus did?  Describe in detail.

(extra credit:  Why is it a funny thing to talk about either Columbus or Ericcson “discovering” America, considering what happened to both once they landed there?)

2.  Describe English knights (their code, practice, ideals, etc.).  Do the same for Japanese Samurai.  Compare the two groups, giving similarities and differences.

3.  Compare and Contrast the Battle of Salisbury and the Battle of Tours.  Use places, names, general dates if possible.  Answering this question very well will earn up to five extra points (it’s a very hard question).

4.  Describe the siege of Jerusalem in detail.

5.  Describe the Magna Carta.  Explain what it was, what led to its creation, and the results it produced.  Include details of place, people, etc.

Read all questions in this section and pick one you would like to answer (high school students pick two).  Answer with about 75 to 150 words (high school students use 150 to 250 words)

1.  Charlemagne was crowned by the pope as Roman Emperor.  This began a long cooperation of kings and church and the idea of Christendom.  The Church gave kings legitimacy, and the kings gave the Church protection.  Europe became mostly feudal and Christian.  Was this all good, bad, or both?  How?

2.  Charlemagne was crowned Roman Emperor by the pope.  Was he truly a Roman emperor, the way Constantine or Augustine were?  Why or why not?  Why did he use the title?  Why do you think the pope at the time gave it to him?

3.  Why do you think the Battle of Hastings is the most famous in British history?  Be complete.

4.  “Danegeld” means gold for the Danes.  What do you think Danegeld was?  Who paid it to whom, and why?  How useful was it or wasn’t it?  Can you think of a modern example of the use of something like Danegeld?  Explain in full.

5.  Write a short story of a medieval person on a pilgrimage.  Remember the story is supposed to convey historical facts, consider using it to describe economic, religious, social elements of that time and place.
