was crowned by the pope as Roman Emperor.
This began a long cooperation of kings and church and the idea of
Christendom. The Church gave kings
legitimacy, and the kings gave the Church protection. Europe became mostly feudal and Christian. Was this all good, bad, or both? How?
2. Charlemagne
was crowned Roman Emperor by the pope.
Was he truly a Roman emperor, the way Constantine or Augustine
were? Why or why not? Why did he use the title? Why do you think the pope at the time
gave it to him?
3. Why do you
think the Battle of Hastings is the most famous in British history? Be complete.
4. “Danegeld”
means gold for the Danes. What do
you think Danegeld was? Who paid
it to whom, and why? How useful
was it or wasn’t it? Can you think
of a modern example of the use of something like Danegeld? Explain in full.
5. Write a
short story of a medieval person on a pilgrimage. Remember the story is supposed to convey historical facts,
consider using it to describe economic, religious, social elements of that time
and place.
