4.  When and how did Alexander the Great die, and what had he accomplished before his death?  What happened to his empire after he died?

5. What is the difference between the Peloponnesian War and the Persian War?

Read all questions in this section and pick one you would like to answer (high school students pick two).  Answer with about 75 to 150 words (high school students use 150 to 250 words)

1.  The stories of The Illiad and The Odyssey for many years were not written down.  The tradition of passing on stories from recitation instead of from writing and reading came before writing in many cultures. Tell me briefly about the person who wrote these epic poems.   Can you think of modern examples of storytelling without writing?  What do you think the advantages of this are?  The disadvantages?

 2.  Explain how a city-state is different from an empire or a tribe.  Give examples.  Extra credit if you can also compare it to a nation-state.

3.  Compare Athens to Sparta.  How were they different and how were they similar?   In what way did each work well or poorly?  Which society do you prefer, and why, or what do you like from each society?

4.   Plato said, “Like frogs around a pond we have settled down upon the shores of this sea”.  What did that mean?  What was the importance of this?  Be thorough and specific.

5.  Explain the two stories in your text about Alexander the Great – the story of the Gordian knot and the story of the horse, Bucephalus.  How do these two stories illustrate what was different about Alexander?

Extra Credit:

1.  Draw some letters from the Greek alphabet.


2.  The ancient civilizations of the Fertile Crescent, China, and India were important.  But our American culture traces its roots back mostly to two traditions – the Judeo-Christian tradition (the Jewish people and Christianity) and the Classical tradition (ancient Greece and Rome).

Now that you have studied ancient Greece, name some ideas we value today that come from the Greeks.
