2.  Retell the story of Augustine from the book;  include an explanation of why his life was historically important.

3.  Describe how books were made in the Middle Ages.  Who usually made them?  Why?

4.    Describe the development of the Gupta Dynasty and the Golden Age.

Read all questions in this section and pick one you would like to answer (high school students pick two).  Answer with about 75 to 150 words (high school students use 150 to 250 words)


1.  Susan Wise Bauer has written this book from the point of view of the Western World, but including a lot of history from outside of  the Western tradition.  Do you think her balance is good, or would you like to see more Western history, or would you like to see more nonWestern history?  Why?

2.  Describe and explain the division of the Roman Empire.  Do you think it was wise to divide the empire or not?  Why?


3.  Compare the Code of Justinian to the Code of Hammurabi;  discuss their purposes, their contents, and the situations in which they were written.


4.  When the Indian kings like Chandragupta conquered large territories, or Alexander the Great took over most of the known world, or Rome expanded all the way to Britain, we call that empires.

When the Huns attacked China, India, or the Roman territory, we call that barbarian invasions.

Why?  Do you think this makes sense?  What distinguishes barbarian attacks from empire building?  Do you find one justified as moral and the other not?  Defend your opinion.

5.  The Golden Age of India ended in 550 AD.  The Roman Empire last just a little longer than it, and ended in 520 AD.

Compare the rise and fall of the two empires.
