Essay set #1, description (middle school one essay, high school two)


    1.    What kind of ruler was Catherine the Great?  Where did she come from, where did she become czarina and what does that mean, how did she gain the throne and why, what happened to the czar before her, how did she rule after gaining power?

2.Explain how a steam engine works and why steam power became important, both in how it changed technology and how it changed the economy and the labor market.

3.  Describe the steps that led to England being in control of India, and explain why this particular takeover was unusual (hint:  the East India Company). Be complete.

4.Explain how the Industrial Revolution changed the way people lived.  Be complete.


Essay set #2, analysis and synthesis (middle school one essay, high school two)

    1.    We have another example in Catherine the Great of the relationship between religious leaders and government leaders changing history.  Explain this, and give a few more historical examples from other times and places.

2.Historian Jared Diamond has written a book called “Guns, Germs, and Steel”.  It discusses the coming together of the European powers and the native people in the colonies in America and Africa. His thesis is that military technology, infectious disease, and the railroad all changed history during the time period we are studying now.  Do you agree?  Why or why not?  How? Back up your opinion with evidence from your history lessons.

3.What did China under the Manchu leaders call itself, and why?  How was this reflected in the way they related to the rest of the world?  Did China's isolation and sense of superiority protect it?

4.(This question will probably take a little outside knowledge to answer)
Explain the history of the colonization, plantations, slave trade, revolt, and government of Haiti. Haiti today is a very poor nation.  Why do you think this is?  Consider geography, history, resources. Can you think of any actions that could help Haiti recover from its poverty?

5.If you had lived during the time of the Industrial Revolution, would you have been a Luddite? Why or why not?

6.We have studied three different “revolutions” (not counting the Glorious Revolution) in this book – the American Revolution, the French Revolution, and the Industrial Revolution.  Which do you think has had more impact on your life and the lives of your community today?  Explain your response and give evidence to support your opinion.
