Chapter 35:  Mexican Independence

El Grito de Dolores was the speech of Don Miguel in 1810, calling the Spanish who were born in Mexico to revolt against S ________________ (Dolores was a town, but the word means sadness).  He used his secular name, Miguel H________________.

They killed the Spanish g______________'s men and marched to Mexico C___ , now an army of _________________ soldiers.  Hidalgo re______, the Spanish army attacked, and the rebel army sc______________.  The Spanish def____________ Hidalgo (the does not mean he isn't a priest, it means he can't act as a priest, do the job of a priest) and be____________ him.  His rebellion is celebrated as Mexican I____________ Day.

Chapter 37:  Troubled Africa

Traders in S____ Africa from Europe (En_____) met the Zulu leader, Shaka.  He gained power after being an outcast with his people, and taught them to used j_____ spears instead of th________ spears.  He taught them battle tactics and gave them training.  In 18____ he began expanding his territory through south and c_____ Africa;  this was called the m________, the C_______, or the Time of Troubles.  Two m_______________ died.

Chapter 38:  American Tragedies

Chapter 39:  China Adrift

Chi'en-hang of China gave power fo Ho-_____ and made him part of the family;  he was corrupt. 

Pinyin J_____ became emperor after Chi-en-hang had ruled for ____ years, but Chi-en-hang, his father, kept the power.  When Pinyin Jiqing (now Chi-en-lung)'s father died, he told Ho-Shen to kill himself to try to stop the bribery and corruption.  This impoverished the country for the next emperor, T____-kung. 

China had a problem with o____, which was illegal but widely used.  It was often sold by the Br_______.  This made China poor, also.  The emperor tried to root out the opium trade.  The Chinese confiscated and destroyed opium from the British, telling them couldn't trade in C_____ unless they surrendered the drug. 

Britain used its strong n_______ to force China to open its ports, not just Canton, to British trade, with the Treaty of N________.  China had to pay for the destroyed o______ and open up five ports, where the British built settlements and lived.

Chapter 40:  Mexico and Her Neighbor

The new nation of M________ controlled a large territory in what is now the southwest United States, including the current state of T_____, which was populated by English descendents, A_____.  American settlements in New Spain were called em__________. 

Mexico banned further American immigration into Texas in 1830.  Santa A_____ became the new dictator of Mexico, and passed laws against gun ownership in Texas.  The Texans established g_______ to defend themselves against Mexican authority.  American Texans began to take over, wrote a constitution for Texas, and asked Sam H____________ to lead them.  Jim B______ and Davy Cr__________moved into the A______________ to defend against Santa Ana.  It had been a m________.  The Texans refused to surrender, the Mexican army attacked, _____ Mexican soldiers were killed, all _____ Texans were killed.  “R_______ the A_________” became a battle cry for Texans fighting Mexico.

The fight between Mexico and Texas turned into the M________-A____________ War.  Houston forced Santa Ana to recognize that Texas was in independence r________.  Then Texas joined the U________ S___________, The United States army marched on Mexico City and forced Mexico to sell the areas now in Cali_____, Nev____, U____, A____________, C__________, W_____________ and New M___________.

Chapter 41:  New Zealand and Her Rulgers

The people of New Zealand were called by outsiders the M_____.  Many died from fighting with each other or disease.  There was fighting among settlers.  The Treaty of W_________ made New Zealand a colony of Bri________, subject to British law.  Settlers raised sh______.
