Work together with a partner to decipher what some of these common metaphors mean.  Use your knowledge of ancient Greek and other history and mythology to help you.


1.  What does it mean for someone to have the golden touch?



2.  What does it mean if someone is described as “rich as Croesus”?



3.  Hellas (in Greek, λλάς ) is the old word for Greece.  What do you think Hellenic and Hellenistic mean?



4.  An event was held near Mt. Olympus  in ancient Greece, and we still celebrate this event today.  What is it called?



5.  In Revelation 22:14 we read “I am the Alpha and the Omega”.  What does that mean? 



6.  What is a Persian rug?




7.  There is a major city in modern Egypt called Alexandria, but if you check the map you’ll see there are many cities and towns in that region with similar names.  Why?



8.  What does it mean if a person is very Spartan in his behavior?



9.  I’m working on a project for my job and a colleague volunteers to help, but I find later that this was just a Trojan horse.  What might that mean?



10.  If I say a problem is “Gordian”, would I be saying it is a big problem or a small one?  Why do you think so?



11.  If I say spelling is my “Achilles’ heal”, what do I mean?


12.  If I run a marathon, what event am I reliving from ancient Greece?
