Note cards:
Follow directions in class for taking notes and turning in cards with
a partner. These cards will be graded and used as part of your test
grade.
Essay Section 1,
understanding and recall; middle school students pick 1, high school
pick 2. Be complete.
1. Tell the story of Julius Caesar, from his early years to his
death.
2. Describe the history of the Jewish people, from Abraham to the
destruction of the Temple. Don't get bogged down in detail on this
one!
3. Describe the life of Jesus Christ, from his birth to his death.
Give enough detail, but make sure you manage your time well.
4. Tell the story of Stilicho; explain why he was important and
what his death meant.
5. Explain in detail some of what we've received as our heritage
from Rome.
6. What one story, event, person, or fact from ancient history (in
the book or from your own research) is most interesting to you?
Explain what and why in detail.
Essay Section 2,
analysis and synthesis; middle school students pick 1, high school
pick 2. Be complete.
1. An
autocrat is a leader who has absolute power over his nation.
A military dictator is an unelected ruler who rules because of his
position in the military (for example. as a general). A junta is a
group of military leaders ruling together.
A populist is a leader claiming to represent the common people.
A plutocrat is a person in a leadership position because he is rich.
A theocrat is a government leader who rules as a religious leader,
also.
Give an example with a brief explanation of ancient leaders in 3
or more of these categories. For extra credit, give an example of
some modern leaders in these categories.
2. Describe how
Julius Caesar and Octavian (Augustus Caesar) were alike and
different. Include an explanation of what made each successful.
3. Compare the life
of Jesus of Nazareth with that of any other historical ancient figure
we have studied. Explain similarities and differences. In what ways
was his message similar to that of other great men? In what ways was
his message unique?
4. Compare in full
any two people from ancient history.
5. We've studied
emperors, philosophers, pharaohs, generals, chieftains, queens,
kings, senators, artists, and writers. Why do you think we haven't
studied much about farmers, hunters, ordinary mothers and fathers,
carpenters, weavers, merchants and slaves? Do you think this is a
problem in the study of history, or not? Would you be able to study
the lives of ordinary people for your own research paper? Explain.
6. Why did the
Romans call Attilla the Hun “The Scourge of God”? In your
opinion, were the Romans right to do that?
