First set of essay questions, remembering and comprehending:
Read all questions in this section and pick one you would like to answer (high school students pick two).  Answer with about 75 to 150 words (high school students use 150 to 250 words)

1.  Explain the process of harvesting silk.  Include information in the history, geography, use, and distinguishing factors of silk.

2.  Describe how Howard Carter and his colleagues made their biggest discovery.  Use “who, what, where, when, why, and how” to give a complete answer.

3.  Retell the story of Moses and the Exodus.

4.  Amenhotep changed the religion of Egypt during his reign as pharoah.  Describe the change, how it affected Egypt, and how the people of Egypt accepted his changes.

5.  Retell the story of the Minotaur, including details about where and when the story first was told.

Second set of essay questions, analyzing and synthesizing information:
Read all questions in this section and pick one you would like to answer (high school students pick two).  Answer with about 75 to 150 words (high school students use 150 to 250 words)

1.  Compare the story of Ananzi to the story of Gilgamesh.  How are the stories similar or different in style, character, purpose, setting?  What cultures do the two stories come from, and how do the stories reflect the differences or similarities between those cultures?

2.  Howard Carter was not a professional archaeologist.  Like many scientists and historians of the past, his work did not pay well or at all, his income came from elsewhere (he was from an aristocratic background) and he studied out of interest, not as a career.  Do you think it is better or worse that today we usually have professional archaeologists, instead of amateur ones?  Why?  Give examples if you can.

3.  So far we have studied ancient Egypt; China; many Mesopotamian cultures like Sumer, Babylon, and Assyria; the Jewish people of Canaan; the Phoenicians; and India.  Which culture do you find most interesting, and why?

4.  Monotheism was rare in the ancient world.  Why do you think this was the case?  How do you think it changed the world when  cultures changed to monotheism from polytheism?  Use examples of monotheism and polytheism when explaining your opinion.

5.  This is a hard one!  Speculate about how geography (where a country lies in relation to other countries, warm and cool zones, mountains and bodies of water, dry and wet zones, etc.) affects the development of a civilization.  Use two or more examples from Crete, Phoenicia, Canaan, Egypt, Mesopotamia, India, China, Persia, or sub-Sahara Africa.

Extra Credit:

1.  What was another name for Nubia?

2.  The history book discusses the difference between polytheism and monotheism.  Theism means belief in a god or gods.  From what you know, can you guess what some of these words mean (define the word, don’t just divide it)?

polynomial

Polynesia

polygon

polysyllabic

polyglot

monarchy

monotone

monologue

monorail

3.  Consider the word “Mediterranean”.  If you break it into “medi” and “terra”, what do you think the word describes?  Think of the sea on a map and it will make sense.
