Book recommendations for a student wanting to read books in addition to the SOTW and supplemental reading. Forgive the lack of italics, I'm lazy.
All books have potential for some adult material. I've marked (*) the ones that are likely to be especially difficult and should be approved by a parent.
If there's a particular area of history where you have an
interest, let me know and I'll research some possibilities for you. I
have some of these books, so if you're choosing from this list and need
to borrow a copy let me know.
The Illiad, The Odyssey, and the Aeneid, of course -- epic poems
Herodotus
Thucydides
Josephus
(histories)
Caesar's accounts of his campaigns
(war)
Cicero's letters
(rhetoric)
Plato's Republic
(philosophy)
Aristotle
(science / metaphysics)
Antigone
Oedipus Rex*
The Trojan Women
(plays, there are others)
Ovid's Metamorphosis*
Paidric Collum has several retellings, one is the Children's Homer, another is great world myths
Many Old Testament books would be great selections -- I suggested Job, but Kings, Maccabees, Psalms, Proverbs -- about any of it would do. Any student reading Leviticus or Deuteronomy deserves massive extra credit.
