Your turn to grade.
Instead of writing essays this week, I'll ask you to evaluate
my essays below. I have written two essays for each question, and have written
on a question that asks for description and a question that asks for analysis.
Grade using the checklist provided at the end. Mark each essay where you see problems, then next to each
essay give it a grade (a number out of ten).
1. Describe the progress of
Islam from its roots to its invasion into Europe.
Essay one:
After
mohammad died, his friend abu bakr took over. This was after he became a muslim
because Mohamid thought God told him to “Recite” and then he went and taught in
one city and then they kicked him out so he went to another and then later he
went back to Mecca and took over after raiding travelers.
Then
later Mohamid told everyone to follow the five pillars and pray and treat
people well, and his religion spread. Leaders after him. Abu Bakr took over and
then later they took over Spain. After a slave who became a soldier was asked
to come to Spain.
Essay two:
On the Arab
Peninsula, the tribal people practiced a pagan religion until a man named
Muhammad told them there was only one God that should be worshiped.
Muhammad believed he
had been visited by an angel in the desert, and told to “Recite”. He recited
the Qur'an to his people, and they became Muslims. They tried to live by the
five pillars, which taught them to do things like pray every day and give to
the poor.
Muhammad had to run
away from Mecca and settle in Medina with his followers, but after he became a
strong leader and followed as a prophet he started to tell his people to attack
Mecca's traders. Eventually, he took over in Mecca and many more people became
Muslims.
After he died, Abu
Bakr became caliph. That meant he led the Muslims and the religion spread to
other Arab areas. Eventually, a fight between the leaders in Spain gave a
Muslim soldier a chance to take over Spain for the Muslim empire.
2. Some people say that
Islam is just a Christian heresy (a version of Christianity with mistakes). Do
you think this is true or not? Why?
Essay three:
I
don't know because I don't no why they would be like Christians because they
aren't, they are muslims. Maybe it's for some reasons.
Like
they have a book they think is from God.
And
followers and a prophet.
Some
things like prayer are the same.
We
give money to the poor to.
But
I don't think so at all.
Essay four:
Islam could be considered a Christian heresy because
the Muslims might have picked up a lot of their ideas and traditions from the
Christians that lived in the region, or from the Jewish people.
Islam has a lot in
common with Judaism, particularly, becus they are both monotheistic religions
with a ritten book they look at as scripture and from God. They also all try to
lead a life avoiding sin and praising God.
Christianity, though,
is also very different from Islam because the center of Christianity is the
sacrifice of Jesus, who is one of the persons of God. Many Christians feel they
have a relationship with Jesus. They see his death as a way to salvation. This
entire story is missing in Islam.
Islam probably used a
lot of the ideas of Christianity, but I don't believe it comes from
Christianity. I think Islam is its own religion that has added some Christian
or Jewish elements.
